Chinese Qing Cloisonne Enamel Rectangular Hinged Box with Inner Tray
item#: 1473262
price: SOLD
Chinese late Qing dynasty rectangular form hinged cloisonne box with inner tray resting above an open compartment decorated on the exterior in cloud form cloisons with butterflies, flowers, and scrolling foliage emerging from rockery and set against a turquoise ground. Blue counter enamel interior and base. The box was likely designed for holding jewelry with the padded pink silk applied to the inner lid to protect the contents in the tray. Two heavy brass handles and front lock plate. The pure pink enamel color (introduced by the 1870s) and the cloud form cloisons help date the box to circa 1890-1911. 9 3/4" long x 5 3/8” wide x 4 1/2" high (excluding handles). Very good overall condition. The enamel at the four corners of the lid is slightly distressed, but there are no enamel losses visible. From the Phoenix, Arizona collection of a former expatriate to China from 1983-1987.
