Large Chinese ink and acrylic on crumpled paper painting of a mountainous landscape scene with trees in the foreground by Zhu Yixiong (Ju I-Hsiung). Titled, dated 1978 in cycle years, and signed in black ink with two red artist seals below the signature. Mounted on a wood backing and framed in a nice quality wood moulding with no glass. Framed size: 25 1/2” x 47 1/2." Very good overall condition. Zhu Yixiong (1923-2012) was born in Jiangsu province and graduated from Xiamen University in 1947. He studied and taught Chinese art in the Philippines for many years before emigrating to the United States in 1968. He became professor of Chinese art at Washington and Lee University in Virginia and was designated artist-in-residence emeritus after retiring. In 1978, he traveled to Taiwan where he painted many landscapes and subjects from the Taiwan countryside. In 2012, a posthumous exhibition was held at the Princeton Art Gallery. Zhu masterfully blended traditional Chinese aesthetics with modern western techniques. His work is included in the national museums of Taiwan and the Philippines and can be found in art institutions worldwide. In 2017, hundreds of Zhu’s paintings were lost in a fire that consumed his family home and studio.
