Shikimaro Japanese Edo Woodblock Print Thirty-six Poetic Immortals
item#: 1512832
price: $400.00
Japanese Edo period woodblock print by Kitagawa Shikimaro (active ca. 1804-1820) featuring a high ranking courtesan (oiran) of the licensed quarter seated and reading a letter from the series "Female Poetic Immortals in the Modern Style, a Set of Thirty-Six" published by Nishimuraya Yohachi circa 1813. Each print from the series features a poem, shown at the upper right of this image. Signed "Shikimaro ga" at the lower right with the publisher's seal below and kiwame/Maruya censor seals to the left. Paper: 15 1/4" x 10 3/8." Very good impression quality with embossed highlights and good color remaining. The fine paper is aged but remains supple. There is a fade line (or mat discoloration) evident around the edges and there is a center fold line. The paper has crinkles and old repairs to tiny holes, typical wear, and soiling. A pencil notation "Shikimaro" is on the back.
