Japanese Edo period woodblock print by Kikugawa Eizan (1787-1867) featuring a high ranking courtesan (oiran) in the licensed quarter squatting down to read a letter by the light of a lamp from the series "Eight Views of Events in the Yoshiwara" published by Kawaguchiya Uhei circa 1814-1817. Two barely visible rubbed seals are at the lower left. Signed "Kikugawa Eizan ga" at the lower right. Tipped at the top to a backing bearing the authentication seal of S. M. Shiba of Miyanoshita. The red Shiba seal is also on the lower back of the woodblock print. Paper: 14 1/4" x 9 7/8." Good overall condition for its age with typical fading, rubbing, soiling, wear, and thinned areas in the paper. There is an old repair to a short tear at the lower right.
