price: $225.00
Japanese woodblock print of a beauty and child by Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) depicting the actor Bandô Shûka I as Shinzaemon's wife Otoki, with a child actor as his son Shinkichi published by Hayashiya Shogoro in the 7th month of 1852. The image is signed at the right side "Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi ga" (used circa 1850) within a gourd shaped cartouche. The red Yoshi Kiri seal is beneath the signature. The publisher's seal and date seal is at the upper left and the double censor seals are at the upper right corner. Paper: 14 1/2" x 9 5/8". Good overall condition with fading, minor soiling, and minor wear evident. The print is not backed and the image and baren marks are clearly visible on the reverse side. Fair impression quality. There is a tiny worm hole in the upper margin and some small adhesive stains at the top of the back. An example of this image can be found on the online website of the Museum of Fine Art Boston.
