Japanese Meiji Wood Kanban Pharmacy Medicine Shopkeeper's Sign
item#: 1511294
price: $450.00
Japanese Meiji period polychromed wood single-sided kanban pharmacy sign for the Van Mittr stomach medicine featuring a foreign man on horseback galloping to rescue anyone with stomach cramps. The name on the sign is romanized as "Uluus." Two versions of this sign are illustrated in "Kanban: The Art of the Japanese Shop Sign" by Dana Levy and Lea Sneider. As noted on page 151 describing one sign in the collection of the Peabody Museum, original signs for specific pharmacies carrying the medicine were acceptable even when the product had an officially licensed kanban. Late 19th to early 20th century. Measures about 33" long x 23" high x 1 1/2" deep. Very good overall condition with typical wear for its age and function.
