Sino-Tibetan thangka painted in gouache on cloth with a scene featuring an eleven headed and eight armed Avalokitesvara on a cloud at the center surrounded by various figures all set against a dark blue ground. Three Gelug monks are seated on clouds at the top and three Buddhas are sitting cross-legged on lotus thrones among clouds below them with their hands held in various mudra positions. At the lower left is a guardian figure with a horse, an elephant, and two attendants. Standing at the lower right is a Guanyin on a lotus pedestal. Painting: 26” x 17 1/2.” Fair overall condition. The pigments are faded and worn, there are creases and small losses in the cloth, and the work is fully mounted to a firm rectangular backing. From the collection of of Gordon Lee Burke (1893-1963) by descent. Born in Shanghai to missionaries, Burke entered the U.S. foreign service after WWI and was considered an authority on China. He served as vice consul in Hankow, Chefoo, and Foochow, China; a language officer in Beijing; and consul in Tientsin. He departed from China when the U.S. entered WWII.
