Large Japanese Meiji to Taisho period "aka-e" (red) Kutani vase with ovoid body, splayed foot, and flared mouth, the neck flanked by a pair of shishi form handles at the upper shoulder. The vase is decorated in overglaze rust-red and polychrome enamels with gilt highlights. One side features Kusunoki Masashige, the archetype of a loyal samurai, seated under a pine tree bidding farewell to his son before the battle of Chihaya. A delicate bird and flower scene is on the reverse. The neck holds a dense abstract pattern executed in fine green moriage dots and gilt highlights. The base holds a red three-character mark reading in Japanese "Kutani made." Circa 1890-1920. 13 1/4” high x nearly 7” diameter. Very good overall condition.
