item#: 1503819
price: $350.00
Heavily potted Japanese Meiji to Taisho period Kutani porcelain deep bowl decorated in the Yoshidaya style of aode (green) polychrome pigments with the spirits of the legendary couple from Noh theater Jo and Uma (Jotomba) in a landscape scene under pine. Jo holds a rake and Uma a broom with which they will clear pine needles (symbolizing longevity) under moonlight. A crane flies in the sky above them and at the bottom left is the minogame, or mythical tortoise, with the long train of seaweed growing on its back. Shown together, they are also symbols of longevity. It is believed the monogame can live for hundreds or thousands of years. A band of leafy grape vines encircles the exterior. A "fuku" (good fortune) mark is within a square green seal on the bottom. 10 1/8” diameter x 3 1/4" high. Weighs 2 lbs. Late 19th to early 20th century. Very good overall condition. There are two tiny flea bites on the rim and one small chip or burst bubble on the side (see images of sides). Stand not included.
