item#: 1500130
price: $275.00
Japanese Edo period woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) from a series titled "Sixteen Wonderful Considerations of Profit" published by Enshuya Matabei in 1846. The series paired beautiful women with the sixteen Buddhist rakan, or holy men. This image, titled "Saint Shokuran says Eating Badly is Unprofitable," is number 10 from the series. The rakan, who was known to have struggled with gluttony, is depicted in the scroll at the upper right holding up his associated symbolic item. The series title is to the left of the rakan with the series number below it. The print is signed at the lower right "Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi ga" with the red Yoshi Kiri seal below it. The censor’s seal is above the signature and the publisher's seal is below it. 14 5/8" x 9 7/8”. Very good color and overall condition. The print is not backed. There are a few worm holes that are well disguised in the kimono, on the lacquer box, and at the right edge. Minor wear primarily to the edges and some fading evident. There is a soft vertical crease in the upper section at the center. An example of this print can be found in the online collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Art.
