Chinese Ming Dynasty Wanli Period Blue and White Porcelain Kendi
item#: 1497442
price: $1,300.00
Chinese late Ming dynasty Wanli period kendi with a compressed globular body and mammiform spout decorated on the body in underglaze cobalt blue with flowers and scrolling foliage on a faintly blue-gray tinted white porcelain ground. Leafy peaches and ribboned lozenges decorate the spout and a band around the shoulder. The tubular neck, which flares to a wide disk shaped mouth, is painted with a stiff leaf band. The base is glazed and the foot rim is unglazed. Measures about 7 1/8" high x 6 1/2" diameter. Circa 1573-1620. Very good overall condition with typical wear. There is a fine old browned hairline at the top rim and there are some tiny frits and imperfections to the spout (see closeup images). Kendi is a Malay word for this style of handle-less drinking or pouring vessel. This piece is from an old Tucson collection. As the label indicates, it was deaccessioned from the National Museum of the Philippines in Manila.
