Tibetan thangka densely painted in gouache on cloth with a scene featuring the seven-tiered dark blue Mahottara Heruka, the wrathful form of the Buddha and principle wrathful diety of the bardo, depicted standing on a lotus throne with multiple heads, arms, and legs and surrounded by a flaming aureole in consort with Krodheshvari shown lying on a tiger’s skin. Seven herukas, rendered over inverted triangles, and other figures surround the central image. 19th century. Canvas: 35” x 24 1/2" (Silk framing: 49” x 30 3/4" (33 1/2" wide at the very bottom). There are typical signs of wear and cracks in the canvas from age. From a Tucson, Arizona estate.
