Large Meiji Period Japanese "aka-e" (red) Kutani deep bowl decorated in overglaze rust-red and polychrome enamels with gilt highlights and featuring a central scene of birds in a landscape with a pond and flowering plants. The interior border consists of four alternating sections of butterflies set against scrolling foliage and geometric patterns. The exterior is decorated on opposing sides with a landscape scene and a floral bouquet. The base holds a red two-character mark reading in Japanese "Kutani." Dates from the late 19th to early 20th century. 9 3/8” diameter x 4" high. Very good overall condition with typical minor wear to the overglaze enamels. There is a tiny production flaw or burst bubble at the rim.
