Rare Japanese first edition Taisho period shin hanga woodblock print titled “Mt. Arashi in Spring” from "New Selection of Noted Places of Kyoto (First Series)" by Miki Suizan (1887-1957) published in 1924 by Sato Shotaro in an edition of 200. Carved by Maeda Kentaro and printed by Oiwa Tokuzo. The black ink signature and red seal of the artist are at the lower right. The red seal of the publisher is on the back. Paper measures 15 3/4" x 11" (image: 15 1/2" x 10 1/2"). Very good overall condition. The paper is slightly toned and fading is evident. There is slight wrinkling of the paper at the top right corner and two small thinned areas at the upper corners. Margins are evident at the top and right only. There is a pencil notation on the back. This print is illustrated on page 112, plate 145 of "The Female Image: 20th Century Prints of Japanese Beauties" by Amy Reigle Newland and Hamanaka Shinji, Hotei/ABE publishing, 2000. A full color illustration can also be found on page 173 of "Fresh Impressions: Early Modern Japanese Prints," Toledo Museum of Art. Miki Suizan was a pupil of Nihonga painter Takeuchi Seiho. Miki Suizan is perhaps best known for his paintings and woodblock prints of bijin. Landscape subjects by this artist are rare.
