item#: 1401755
price: SOLD
Large single-section Chinese Song to Yuan dynasty bulbous stoneware funerary vessel in the form of a granary, or grain silo (cang), covered overall in a finely crackled qingbai (yingqing) glaze with a tan-colored tint that ends at the bottom of the vessel leaving the base and foot unglazed. A domed top designed to resemble a lid is topped by a large round lotus bud finial. A small rectangular window-like opening is at the midsection and applied ornamental strap work surrounds the opening and accents the top and sides. 13” high x about 7 1/2" diameter. Circa 13th century. Granaries were funerary objects used to hold grain and other possessions the deceased might require in the afterworld. Very good solid overall condition. There is a small chip to one of the strap work embellishments at the top and there are typical losses to the thin glaze. One side has a prominent burial encrustation.
