Chinese Eastern Han Dynasty Proto-porcelain Yue Ware Hu Form Vase
item#: 1395591
price: SOLD
Large Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220) Yue ware hu form stoneware vase with two moulded and incised loop handles on the shoulder. Measures about 11 1/2" high x 8" diameter. Above the waist, the vase is decorated with two sets of incised lines running around the circumference. A mottled olive green glaze, consisting of green, brown and cream pigments, accents the upper section of the vase and the interior of the mouth. These accent areas are separated by a brown glazed neck. The lower portion of the vase is an unglazed light terracotta-brown color. Very good overall condition. A few tiny fleabites to the foot and a small amount of loss to the glaze at the rim. See illustration #34 in "A Handbook of Chinese Ceramics" by Suzanne G. Valenstein, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1989" for a similar example. According to Valenstein, this type of Han ware is sometimes referred to as "proto-porcelain."
