price: $500.00
Japanese Edo period woodblock print by Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769-1825) depicting the Kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro possibly portraying Yoshitsune wearing a kimono with a pattern of Karasu (crow) Tengu. The mythical half man half bird creatures who lived deep in the woods were masters of swordsmanship with whom Yoshitsune practiced sword fighting. The tsuba on both swords is in the form of the crest of the Ichikawa family. Beneath the signature is the kiwame censor seal (used prior to 1842) and the seal of the publisher Kanekoya Jinbei. According to Andreas Marks in “Publishers of Japanese Woodblock Prints: A Compendium,” this publisher produced several unserialized actor prints by Toyokuni circa 1811-1825. Full vertical oban size measuring 14 7/8” x 10.” Very good impression, color, and overall condition with gauffrage evident. There are a few light stains and some minor soiling and creases visible. The print is not backed and the image and baren marks are clearly visible.
