Chinese Republic Shiwan Shekwan Pottery Eight Daoist Immortal Figure
item#: 1275881
price: SOLD
Chinese Shiwan (Shekwan) pottery model of a Daoist Immortal, holding a fan and seated on a large gourd. The figure resembles Li Tieguai, who ordinarily is depicted with his staff and often carrying a gourd which was believed to contain medicine powerful enough to revive the dead. The figure holds a fan, the main attribute of the immortal Zhongli Quan (Han Zhongli). The fan is believed to have the power to revive the dead. Perhaps the figure is an amalgam of the two immortals. It stands about 8 1/2" high and dates from the Republic period (early 20th century). It is particularly finely rendered and in excellent condition. From a Scottsdale, Arizona collection.
