Japanese Cement Mortar Block Print Haku Maki Poem 71-82
item#: 1051411
price: SOLD
Cement mortar block print pencil-titled "Poem 71-82" (indicating production in 1971) by Maki Haku (1924-2000). Limited edition print numbered 40/202. Pencil-signed in the lower margin. The artist's square red seal is at the lower left corner of the image. This print features the highly embossed ideographs characteristic of Maki's work. The designs were created by inscribing on wet cement. Paper size: 12"V x 8 3/4"H (image size: 10 1/2"V x 7 1/4"H). Very good overall condition. The top back margin is slightly skinned from removal of framing tape and there are some tiny traces of adhesive remaining. There is a faint mat burn line around the margin and tiny foxing spots in the margins and verso. A color illustration of Maki's work and a write-up on the artist can be found on pages 140 & 141 of "Collecting Modern Japanese Prints Then & Now" by Mary and Norman Tolman, Charles E. Tuttle Co., Vermont & Tokyo, 1994. For a thorough analysis of the artist's life and work, please see Dr. Daniel Tretiak's informative text "The Life and Works of Haku Maki."
