item#: 1456882
price: $2,500.00
Authentic Japanese Edo period woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro II (flourished circa 1804-1830) depicting Takigawa and Hanaogi, two famous oiran (high ranking courtesans) of the House of Ogiya published by Moriya Jihei. The print bears a kiwame seal and date seal for Bunka 3 (1806) at the lower left beside the Utamaro signature. Kitagawa Utamaro died in 1806, so this print is more likely by Kitagawa Utamaro II. Paper size: 14 7/8” x 10.” The print is in good overall condition for its age. It is faded and slightly soiled with worn areas and repaired holes in the paper. It is not backed or laid down. It is tipped at the top two corners and floating on an archival mat with an accompanying overmat cut to reveal the entire print. From the estate of a Tucson, Arizona physician.
