Japanese Meiji Woodblock Print Chikanobu Mirror of Ages Jidai Kagami
item#: 1434048
price: $175.00
Japanese Meiji Period "okubi-e" (literally "big head") woodblock print depicting a modestly dressed woman from the Horeki Era (1751-1763) from the series "Mirror of the Ages" ("Jidai Kagami") by Yoshu Chikanobu (1838-1912) published by Matsuki Heikichi in 1896. The upper inset portion of this print illustrates the facade of the Nakamuraza Kabuki theater in Edo. This series features bust portraits of beauties representing various eras from the 16th to 20th centuries. This image is described and illustrated on page 190 of "Chikanobu: Modernity and Nostalgia in Japanese Prints" by Bruce Coats, Scripps College and Hotei Publishing, 2006. The series is also described and illustrated in color on pages 80-82 of "The New Wave" by Amy Reigle Stephens, Bamboo Publishing, London, 1993. 14 1/4" x 9 1/4." Very good color and impression quality with mica highlights to the collar. Very good overall condition. Album backed with mulberry paper. The print is positioned low and to the right on the paper, so it has a large top and left margin and small bottom and right margin. The signature at the right margin is somewhat trimmed. There is a tiny bit of wormage at the bottom right margin corner and there is a small bubble in the paper to the left of her face. The album backing is somewhat toned.
