Japanese Sumi-e Scroll Silk Painting Komuro Suiun Shoki Demon Queller
item#: 1416515
price: $250.00
Japanese sumi-e scrolled painting on silk by Komuro Suiun (1874-1945) depicting a well detailed bearded Shoki, the demon queller, dressed in scholar's robes and hat and posed in a fierce stance with sword in hand prepared to ward off evil spirits. The figure is set against a dense calligraphic background. The painting is signed "Suiun" with an unreadable square red seal below. Nice silk brocade mounting with wood scroll ends. Scroll: 66"V x 20"H (painting: 41 1/2"V x 15 5/8"H). Dated in Chinese cycle years to Year of the Horse (1918). Very good overall condition with one flaw to the left of Shoki's knee-high boot. From the private collection of a former American expatriate to Asia in the 1980s.
