item#: 1393294
price: $165.00
Chinese Qing dynasty deep dish decorated in underglaze blue on a white ground with an animated battle scene from the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history (220-280). The dish illustrates a famous battle at Xicheng where the military strategist Zhuge Liang pretended the city was empty in order to cause the Shu army to believe an ambush was inside and retreat. The four-character mark on the base is identified in Gerald Davidson’s “New & Revised Handbook of Marks on Chinese Ceramics” as “the source of eternal exuberance” (page 140, mark 1822). The dish measures 7” diameter x 1 3/8” high. 19th century. There is an original production crack in the center with fine associated hairlines extending in two directions on the base. This dish is from the collection of a former American expatriate to China between 1983-1987.
