Japanese Meiji Keyaki Zelkova Kuruma Wheeled Tansu Chest
item#: 1359725
price: SOLD
Japanese "zelkova" (keyaki) wood "kuruma" (wheeled) tansu configured with a single horizontal shelf dividing the interior into two sections set behind slatted sliding doors. A single long drawer is at the bottom. Iron fittings and warabite handles. Original finish. 19th century. 43 3/4" long x 20 1/4" deep x 37 3/4" high. Very solid and in good, study overall condition. There are some old restorations that were executed in Japan, including replacement of the inset center panel in the top. There are some separations in the wood from our dry Arizona climate and a small amount of warping is evident at the center front. The sliding doors have had some nail reinforcements (see image) and could benefit from more careful reworking. This tansu was purchased in Japan in the 1970s and is from an Apache Junction, Arizona collection.
