Chinese Qing dynasty export fan densely painted on the front and back with a continuous scene of figures engaged in a variety of activities in indoor and outdoor settings. An elaborate decorative border with gilt edge surrounds the painting. The ribs and guard sticks are finely carved sandalwood. Housed in a fitted reddish-brown lacquered box with custom fitted green silk interior. Measures about 16 1/2" across when open, guard sticks are 9” long; box 10 5/8” x 2 3/8” wide x 1 7/8” high. Late 19th to early 20th century. The fan is in very good overall condition with minor typical wear mainly at the folds. Half of the clasp on the lacquered box is missing and there are some chips to the lacquer. The interior silk shows signs of wear. This fan is from an old Tucson, Arizona collection.
