Large Chinese late Qing dynasty Guangxu period brown etched vase decorated in underglaze blue and white slip with a bird flying over flowers and rockery set against a creamy white crackled glaze ground. Two applied brown animal mask handles are at the top of the shoulder. The rim is dressed brown. The interior and base are glazed while the foot rim is unglazed. A brown square seal holding a stylized incised apocryphal 4-character Ming dynasty Chenghua reign mark is on the base. This vase is characteristic of brown etched wares produced between 1880 and 1920. The brown applied decoration is believed to have been intended to imitate bronze metal elements. These wares are also referred to as “Nanking wares.” 12 1/8” high by about 7” diameter. Late 19th century to circa 1900. Weight is 2 kg (4.4 lbs). Very good overall condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. There are a few minor imperfections at the rim. From an old Scottsdale, Arizona collection.
