item#: 1339302
price: $600.00
Chinese late Qing dynasty to early Republic period red silk horizontal hanging embroidered in metallic-couched and polychrome silk threads with thirty-one figures engaged in various activities beneath trees in a garden setting. The banner was designed as a birthday celebration for the elder featured at the center of the banner surrounded by a group of figures who have gathered in front of a traditional structure. A smoking censer is at the center of the building with three longevity symbols hanging above it. Auspicious blue bats fly in the background throughout the textile. A fringe of colorful tassels hangs at the bottom from openwork mesh. A cotton border is at the top and lines the back. Measures 12 feet long; 30” high (17” high excluding tassels and top border). Late 19th to early 20th century. The textile is in remarkably good condition with no fading evident and intact embroidery. There is pigment transference evident within the cotton band, but only one small area of soiling or pigment transference within the embroidery itself. From an old Scottsdale, Arizona collection.
