Rare Japanese Edo period woodblock printed pillar print mounted as a hanging scroll by Haruji (active 1760-1770) illustrated and described on page 136 (plate 250) of “The Japanese Pillar Print Hashira-e” by Jacob Pins as “Kamaya Buhei seated in the opening of a shoji. Behind the shadow of a courtesan is seen whose arm and part of a samisen is visible. Below, on an engawa, Oshichi is standing with the temple page Kichiza kneeling beside her.” Circa 1771. Print: 26 ½”V x 6 3/8”H (scroll: about 47”V x 10 1/8”H). There is browning, soiling, and significant buckling to the print and scroll mount. There are a few chips to the red lacquered wood scroll ends. This print is from an old Tucson, Arizona collection.
