Chinese Silk Scroll Painting Bo Ya Beauty Musician He Xiangqin
item#: 1307914
price: SOLD
Chinese scrolled painting executed in ink and color on silk with two beauties seated in a garden setting. Two vertical rows of sumi ink calligraphy and a red square seal are at the upper right. A rough translation of the inscription is: It doesn’t take a saint to play musical instruments. I have to call you a lady, Bo Ya. Bo Ya was a famous musician who lived during the Spring and Autumn Period of the Eastern Zhou dynasty. The painting is dated in Chinese cycle years to 1935 (Year of the Boar) and is signed with the artist’s studio name or pseudonym Wulin Qiaozi (woodcutter of Wulin Mountain) and red seal. A search of the seal indicates it belongs to a Chinese artist by the name of He Xiangqin. The painting has been mounted with Japanese scroll mounting. Lacquered wood scroll ends. Scroll size: 63 1/2" x 12 3/8" (painting: 24 1/2" x 8"). Very good overall condition. There is a very faint soiled spot in the sky and there are a few typical horizontal creases. The scroll mounting is somewhat faded as is shown by a slight color difference behind the two futai strips which hang from the top of the mounting. This scroll is from a Japanese collection in Tucson, Arizona.
