Japanese Arita porcelain round form deep dish decorated in underglaze blue with a karashishi (Buddhist lion dog) among leafy flowers set against a faintly celadon tinted white ground. The back bears an abbreviated apocryphal Chinese Ming dynasty Chenghua reign mark (Taimin nenka) on the glazed base. The foot rim is unglazed. The outside well is decorated around the circumference with karakusa. Circa 1800. Measures just over 11 1/4" diameter x 2" high. Very good overall condition with no chips or cracks. There are typical production imperfections and fine surface scratches from use. This dish is from a Tucson, Arizona estate.
