Chinese Qing dynasty burlwood scholar’s brushpot, or bitong, in natural root form covered with crevices and knotty protrusions. The mouth is wide and flaring. A flat, inset hardwood base is on the bottom. Water will drain from a naturally occurring small hole in one knotty area toward the bottom (see enlargement 7). 6 5/8” high x 4 3/4” diameter. Late 19th to early 20th century. Very good overall condition. There are a few red pigment spots visible in the interior edge from use. A red pigment drip can be faintly seen on the exterior. This piece is from the private collection of former American expatriates to Hong Kong in the 1970s and 1980s.
