Chinese Qing Blue Sweet Pea Straits Jardiniere Planter Cache Pot
item#: 1203588
price: SOLD
Chinese late Qing dynasty porcelain jardiniere, or planter, decorated around the exterior and flaring rim in underglaze blue with leafy vines and sweet pea flowers set against a white ground with a pale blue tint. An abstract vertical pattern extends around the circumference separating the sweet pea pattern from the foot. The interior, base, and foot rim are unglazed. This type of decoration with a sweet pea floral background was produced for the Straits Chinese communities and is also referred to as blue and white nonya ware or "Shanghai ware" (see “Straits Chinese Porcelain: A Collector’s Guide” by Ho Wing Meng). Late 19th to early 20th century. 9 1/4” diameter x about 6” high. Very good overall condition with no chips or cracks. There is a fine scratch in the glaze toward the base (see enlargement 7). From the private collection of a former American resident in Guangzhou and Beijing from 1983-1987.
