Japanese Edo Woodblock Print Kuniyoshi 47 Ronin Faithful Samurai
item#: 1201966
price: $550.00
Japanese Edo period woodblock print depicting “Kataoka Dengoemon Takafusa Leaning on his Bloodstained Spear” from the series “Stories of the Faithful Samurai” published by Ebiya Rinnosuke in 1847. The print is signed at the lower right "Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi ga" (1797-1861). The red Yoshi Kiri seal is beneath the signature. The series features each of the historical forty-seven ronin (masterless samurai) who avenged the death of their lord in 18th century Japan. This image depicts a blood covered Kataoka grimacing in exhaustion after battle. Vertical oban size measuring about 14 1/2"V x 10"H. Very good overall condition. There is light fading evident and the paper is slightly wrinkled. There are two small pieces of clear archival tape at the top margin verso. The print is lightly backed for album mounting yet the image remains clearly visible on the reverse. This image is illustrated and described as plate 1.15 in “Kuniyoshi: The Faithful Samurai” by David R. Weinberg, Hotei Publishing, Leiden, 2000. Originally purchased from the Ronin Gallery in New York in 1986.
