Chinese Qing Guangxu Mirror Black & Gilt Porcelain Vase Immortals
item#: 1195253
price: SOLD
Chinese late Qing dynasty Guangxu period porcelain baluster form vase with narrow neck and flared mouth decorated in gilt over a mirror black reserve with the Daoist “Covert Eight Immortals” symbols, the power objects used by the Eight Immortals. A dense pattern of alternating butterflies and flowers encircles the shoulder and longevity symbols surround the base. The interior and base are glazed white and the foot rim is unglazed. As is characteristic of mirror black pieces from the Qing dynasty, there is a thin brown line around the underside of the mouth rim where the glaze thins. 13 7/8” high. Late 19th to early 20th century. Very good overall condition with no chips or cracks. The gilt decoration shows some typical wear, particularly on the leaf pattern at the neck, but is in remarkably fresh condition overall. There are areas where the black background is somewhat dull. The vase had previously been mounted as a lamp so a hole was drilled in the base and a part of the foot rim appears to have been somewhat flattened. The drilled hole in the base has been professionally conserved and is invisible to the eye. This piece is from a Tucson, Arizona estate. Please note that the light spots and white “ghost-type” images in the black background are from the camera flash and reflection. This vase is from the estate of a 99-year-old Tucson woman who traveled through Asia in the early 20th century.
