16"H Chinese Qing Guangxu Blue White Wedding Vase Shuangxi Straits
item#: 1170499
price: SOLD
Large Chinese late Qing dynasty Guangxu period porcelain trumpet mouth vase decorated in underglaze blue against a white background with four “shuangxi” symbols (indicating double-happiness and wedded bliss) surrounded by a stylized pattern of pencil style scrolling sweet pea vines (symbolizing “many children”). The interior and base are glazed but the low rounded foot rim is unglazed and dressed brown. An apocryphal four-character Ming dynasty Chenghua reign mark is on the base. This type of decoration with a sweet pea floral background was produced for the Straits Chinese communities and is also referred to as blue and white nonya ware or "Shanghai ware" (see “Straits Chinese Porcelain: A Collector’s Guide” by Ho Wing Meng). 16” high. The widely flaring trumpet mouth measures 6" diameter. Late 19th century to circa 1900. Very good overall condition. There are original production imperfections and tiny age chips on the edge of the rim. The faint hairline X-shaped crack on the base (see enlargement 10) is only visible under bright camera lights. This vase is from a Tucson, Arizona collection. It has been in the same family since the 1980s.
