item#: 1145262
price: SOLD
Chinese late Qing dynasty Guangxu period red silk temple hanging or altar frontispiece densely embroidered in metallic-couched and polychrome silk threads with a mirrored pair of phoenix birds and a mirrored pair of foo lion dogs on opposing sides of an antique flower filled vessel. A horizontal celadon green panel across the top is embroidered with precious objects, flowers, and butterflies. A cream colored band of small mirrors and a wider celadon band embroidered with flowers surround both panels. There are metal and mirror accents embedded throughout the textile. Late Qing Dynasty (circa 1880 - 1911). Measures about 36 1/2" high by 39 1/2" wide. This textile is in remarkably pristine condition with virtually no fading evident, intact embroidery, and only minor soiling. The cotton lining has some stains but they do not show through to the front. There is some red color transference at the top corners of the upper cotton or linen band. This textile is from a Green Valley, Arizona collection. It was originally acquired from a Chinese gambling house in Oregon that was being demolished.
