Oversized Japanese limited edition sosaku hanga woodblock print by Tadashi Nakayama (b. 1927) titled “Butterflies and Trumpet” featuring Nakayama’s daughter’s face in profile beside a trumpet with butterflies in flight around her. This image is pencil-signed “T. Nakayama,” numbered 45/95, and dated 1985 in the bottom margin. The bottom margin edge also contains the title and original purchase price of 270,000 yen. The red Nakayama seal is verso. A color illustration of this image can be found on plate 210 of “T. Nakayama” published in 1989. According to this publication, this image was produced in 61 printing stages using 26 blocks and 43 colors. In terms of production, it is considered to be one of Nakayama’s most complex prints. Paper size: 28 1/4”V x 21 3/4”H (image: 23 3/4”V x 17 3/8”H). This print is in very good overall condition. The print is sunstruck in the area of the margin not covered by the previous mat. Two pieces of archival tape are on the back top edge. This image was purchased in Japan at the time of production and is from a Scottsdale, Arizona collection.
