Large Chinese Yuan Dynasty Stoneware Ovoid Storage Jar
item#: 1000561
price: SOLD
Chinese Yuan dynasty stoneware ovoid form storage jar, with everted rim flange, four horizontal loop handles high at the shoulder, and slightly concave base. The glaze is degraded from prolonged burial but a neutral, whitish slip applied to the upper portion of the jar remains. A brown-glazed jar of similar shape, loop handles, and rim attributed to the Song dynasty is in the Barlow Collection at the University of Sussex. These jars were produced for centuries in Guangdong Province and other port cities from the Song dynasty on to store export food and goods. This example is estimated to date circa 13th/14th century. 7” high x about 6 ¼” diameter; mouth 3 ½” diameter. As the images show, the jar is slightly misshapen. From the private collection of a former American expatriate to Guangzhou in 1983-1984.
